This wine was created by Ugo and Vittorio Contini Bonacossi in 1979 with the idea of producing a Bordeaux blend in Carmignano. The first vineyard was located on gravelly soil adjacent to the Furbastream, after which the wine is named. In 1998 the blend was changed and today the wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot grapes.
The wine first undergoes alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks followed by malolactic fermentation in French barriques that helps to mellow the tannins. Aged in barriques for about 15 months followed by a year in bottles. 2010, after spending a further 5 yrs in the bottle has started showing the finesse that Ghiaie Della Furba is known for. The bottle is now drinking v well.
Tasting notes & Reviews
"A wine with rich and silky tannins, lots of ripe fruit and a lemon, currant and cream undertone. Full-bodied, fruity and meticulously clean. Wonderful Bordeaux blend. Drink now." 92 pts, James Suckling, Aug 2015.
"Mid garnet. Surprisingly red fruited on the nose - not dominated by the Cabernet Sauvignon though you can feel the Cabernet tannins in the mouth. Rounded, sweet-tasting and ready now. Lots of tangy pleasure and so unlike a typical Bordeaux blend, with the spice of Syrah showing on the finish" 16.5/20." Julia Harding, JancisRobinson.com Sept 2016
