From the small holding of 1.35ha in Premier Cru Vineyards of Les Chalumeaux, Thierry makes some really fine, premium, rich textural white Burgundies. The Puligny-Montrachet Chalumeaux 1er Cru from Domaine Matrot comes from vines with an average age of 30 yrs. Even though the vineyards have been farmed organically since 2000 these haven’t been certified as yet. This wine is characterized by finesse, subtleness and floral aromas, underlined by an elegant minerality. The wine like most other Domaine Matrot premier cru bottlings has a long fermentation of 8-10 weeks using indigenous yeasts in one to five year old barrels and is bottled just before the next harvest. The wines then spends about a year ageing on lees.
Tasting notes & reviews
Good pale straw-yellow color. Ripe aromas of candied apple and flowers; more exotic than the foregoing wines. Sweet and silky in the mouth, offering a distinctly lacey quality to the flavors of white flowers, fresh almond, spices and minerals. Can't quite match the Charmes for finesse but the broad finish shows a subtle mineral underpinning.-92/100, Stephen Tanzer/VinousMedia, Sep 2013
One of the more extroverted wines in the range, the 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Les Chalumeaux bursts from the glass with tons of personality. Succulent yellow peaches, apricots, spices and honey all blossom as the wine opens up. This is an especially rich, honeyed Puligny with an extroverted personality and a sense of structure with distinct Pinot leanings.-92/100, Antonio Galloni/VinousMedia, Sep 2013
Quite rich fruit impact with chalky finish and some tension. Much more interesting than the village Meursault! -16/20 Richard Hemming/ JancisRobinson.com, Jan 2013
