Umberto Cesari began his wine adventure in the 1960s starting with just 20 hectares of vineyards to pursue his passion for wine making in the heart of Emilia Romagna.
With vines averaging between 15-20 years, Liano is the flagship bottling of the estate that represents a modern vision of classic Sangiovese; it represents Umberto Cesari to the world. One of the most iconic wines of the estate, this a smooth, elegant Sangiovese, with intense progression, harmony, and impressive proportion of all its components.
The Estate is now over 170 hectares. The 2013 won the silver at International Wine Challenge and also a silver at Hong Kong Wine & Spirits competition.
Grown in Calcerous and Clayey soil and fermented in special temperature controlled tanks, the wine undergoes long maceration on the skin. This is followed by 18 months in 5.5 hl Allier Tonneaux and finally in the bottle for 6 months.
This is a wine which is available for drinking almost as soon as it is released but can also age beautifully for a decade and a half.
Tasting Notes & Reviews (from the estate)
"Liano 2013 greets the eye with a lovely, impressively deep colour, and an exceptionally fine nose, clean-edged, precise, pleasurable. Appealingly spicy notes of clove, cinnamon, and black pepper partner with delicious fruit– red and black forest berry, both fresh and liqueured–, while a smooth toastiness tending to chocolate and vanilla heightens the impression of overall aromatic harmony. The palate’s remarkable elegance and smooth texture immediately impress, as do a full body and perceptible yet judiciously- smooth tannins. The final components are a tangy vein of mineral and a magisterial acidity, which drive to a fully-satisfying conclusion."
