This wine was created by Ugo and Vittorio Contini Bonacossi in 1979 with the idea of producing a Bordeaux blend in Carmignano. The first vineyard was located on gravelly soil adjacent to the Furbastream, after which the wine is named. In 1998 the blend was changed and today the wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot grapes.
The wine first undergoes alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks followed by malolactic fermentation in French barriques that helps to mellow the tannins. Aged in barriques for about 15 months followed by a year in bottles. 2012 has won praise from the critics for its finesse and blend. The bottle is now drinking v well.
Tasting notes & Reviews
"The currant and sweet tobacco aromas here are prevailing. Full to medium body, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Tight and very polished. Positive focus. Bordeaux blend. Drink or hold." 94/100, James Suckling, Jul 2016.
"The 2012 Ghiaie della Furba, Carmignano's Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, is dense, rich and layered in style. Even so, the huge tannins and prominent French oak signatures of past years are happily absent. What comes through nicely is a rich, lush expression of fruit, mid-weight structure and plenty of near to medium-term appeal. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah and 10% Merlot, but above all else, the Ghiaie della Furba tastes like a wine from Carmignano." 92/100 Antonio Galloni/Vinous, Nov 2016
