The ever-increasing quality requirement for Château Montrose and La Dame de Montrose, and the increasingly precise selections, now allow an annual production of a 3rd blend: Le Saint-Estèphe de Montrose. Produced on the exceptional terroir of Château Montrose and vinified by the teams at the property, this wine is the fruit of a classic blend of the great Bordeaux grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The 2013 vintage was characterised by general climatic conditions that were more difficult than in other years, highlighting the importance of the terroir and micro-climate that Montrose enjoys. After a very cold winter snap in February and March, the spring was wet, causing delays in the development of the vine. Flowering started only on 6 June, and continued slowly until the end of the month, already a sign of a somewhat late vintage. July saw the arrival of a very fine summer, warm and dry. These very favourable conditions continued until mid September.
Harvest started on 26 September with the first Merlots, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignons as from 7 October, finishing 16 October.
When this bottle was first offered to us, we stayed up until 2am waiting for the bottle to decant and shape up. Thankfully, turned out to be well worth that wait! Reflecting, I wonder why we worried.
The 2013 vintage has a dark, cherry red colour. The expressive nose with aromas of fresh fruit unveils oaky and toasty notes accompanied by a hint of green almond. The clean attack reveals a palate with a fine bouquet of very ripe fruit and a good acidity. The finish is straight and harmonious.
As per the Chateau, Le Saint-Estèphe de Montrose is a wine that can be enjoyed from its early youth and offers an ageing potential of 3 to 5 years.
Previously available only to the estate’s owners and employees, in our opinion, it is by far the most value Bordeaux from a famous classified growth.
At start of last year we mentioned this was a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ find. As the year rolled on, a number of customers who tried, came back for more. Probably the best value Bordeaux bottling from a famed classified growth. Last few cases left to go around. The bottle is at its peak of drinking and will drink well for another 2 years.
