The Langhe style, in many ways, is an even more honest link to the land and vineyards of Piedmont and its people than the world famous cousin Barolo. It’s only lightly aged and there isn’t too much interference by the vintner before it is ready to hit the market. So you get the purity of the fruit & the flavours of the terroir to connect directly with the Nebbiolo soul.
When the Barolos and Barbarescos started getting out of reach for the Nebbiolo lovers, it was the humble Langhe that rose to the occasion to partially fill the void. The light style and the nebbiolo acidity is refreshing. Mauro Veglio’s careful selection and attention has taken that humble bottle and created something even more extraordinary.
Their Langhe Angelo feels like a premium bottle hiding under an unpretentious hood. It’s a Langhe and a bit more. For a lot of Piemontese, Langhe bottlings are their lifeline for the years they have to wait for their Barolos to age. For us, it’s a choice selection for the weekend.
Tasting Notes & Reviews
2020 Vintage
"A production of 20,000 bottles, the Mauro Veglio 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo Angelo sources its fruit from the Langhe (La Morra and Monforte d'Alba) and Roero (Canale d'Alba). It is split approximately 50-50 from these two areas and winemaking is simple, with quick maceration times and a brief eight months in neutral barrique. You get a lot of fruity freshness as a result, with pretty floral notes and a hint of bitter almond." 90/100 Monica Larner, Robert Parker, Aug 2022
2019 Vintage
"The Mauro Veglio 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo Angelo pours from the bottle with a luminous garnet color with bright ruby highlights. The bouquet is fruity and lifted with notes of wild cherry and rose, but you also sense crushed limestone and dusty ash. This is a lean and compact wine that offers a long and polished close and some bright and lifted intensity overall. While a little unorthodox, you might even try this Nebbiolo with some crudité and the classic Piemontese garlic dip called bagna cauda. Some 20,000 bottles were made." 91/100, Monica Larner, Robert Parker, June 2021
2018 Vintage
"This entry-level category of Nebbiolo has been picking up enormous speed in recent years and for very good reason. This wine, the Mauro Veglio 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo Angelo, is accessible and easy-drinking, yet it offers a big dollop of varietal purity that grounds the wine in a special sense of place. The bouquet is redolent of wild berry, rose, tar and licorice, and there's just enough structure to pair with a pork chop grilled with onions and bell peppers. Fruit represents a blend of Nebbiolo from the Barolo appellation and from nearby Roero. Some 20,000 bottles were released." 90/100, Monica Larner, Robertparker.com Jul 2020
