Tasting notes and Reviews
2018 Vintage
"The Gattera Vineyard in La Morra farmed by Mauro Veglio is home to beautiful southeast-facing 70-year-old vines. The 2018 Barolo Gattera (with 9,000 bottles produced) is bright, linear and nicely balanced. The wine is lithe and delicate in spirit, yet it also shows impressive momentum with long-lasting perfumes of forest berry, wildflower and crushed stone. This is a very pretty Barolo." 94/100 Monica Larner, Robert Parker, Aug 2022
"Menthol, iris and French oak aromas come to the forefront. On the palate, notes of vanilla and coffee bean accent a core of dried black cherry while firm, close-grained tannins provide tight support. Drink 2025–2032." 93/100, Sept'21, Kerin O'Keefe
2017 Vintage
"This vintage from Mauro Veglio is a degree lighter in color and contrasts, and that less-saturated appearance is a common trait found across many of the wines from this warm and hot growing season. The Nebbiolo grape is particularly color sensitive, and the 2017 Barolo Gattera sees its fruit sourced from 70-year-old vines in La Morra, a site that is already earmarked for its delicate and nuanced approach. The bouquet is broad and not totally defined here, with some exotic fruit that is mixed with wild berry and peach blossom. I feel that the wine is short in the mid-palate, and that prompts me to suggest a shorter drinking window as a result. I am less convinced by this 9,000-bottle Gattera release than I am by the other wines in this flight from Mauro Veglio." 91/100 Monica Larner, Robert Parker, June 2021
2016 Vintage
"From the comune of La Morra, the Mauro Veglio 2016 Barolo Gattera shows a broad, loosely knit texture. The wine opens faster and more completely once poured into the glass. The fruit is dark, and there's a wide range of aromas with dried cherry and plum, all backed by thick brush strokes of tobacco and spice. Gattera shows more heft and textural richness. In this classic vintage, I prefer the more-delicate Arborina, but both wines are excellent. The estate farms 3.5 hectares in Gattera, but fruit for this wine comes from 70-year-old vines found in a 1.5-hectare sub parcel. It ages in barrique for two years (with 30% new oak and 70% neutral wood). Some 9,000 bottles were made." 94/100 Monica Larner, Robert Parker, Jul 2020
