These are the kinds of wines and vintages that show what a winemaker can do.
A question that often gets asked is what is the drinking window of these wines? We often end up answering, it depends 😅😅
Most high quality bottles, from the best estates and best vintages get a drinking window in the range of 40-50yrs at most. Take the 1961s, 1982s, 2010s, etc. Yet, when you go out and try finding.a bottle of that high quality vintage from a high quality producer after 50 yrs, you find it still has years and years left. Critic ratings and drinking windows get adjusted and the wine continues to live on.
So it's a not a surprise that wines from high quality producers even from an ordinary vintage can last 50-60yrs to still bring pleasure.
So it's not a suprise that a 1947 Cheval Blanc at close to 80yrs is still commanding a price of 15 grand and is hard to find. And a 1921, which even after 100 yrs remains a bottle to source and enjoy!
That has been the driving force in our own wine selection and buying. For years, we have looked for wines from marvellous estates who had the means to make great wines even 50 years ago when finding birthday and anniversary specials.
We couldn't find any critic rating from any of the big names for the vintages (majority of the critic world was still years away from establishing themselves in the 70s). But if you head to cellar tracker, there are some lovely wine notes in the recent years rating the wine from 91-95 points across wine lovers.
When you source to open & drink a bottle such as this, you aren't just drinking a bottle of wine, you are going back in time of history preserved in a bottle from the year you were born in or celebrated your big day, you are drinking
If 1974 means a hell of a lot to you, then this is the hell of a bottle to bring the heavens down. Cheers 🍷🍷
