Tasting Notes & Reviews
2016 Vintage
"An exciting, energetic wine that finally gives the carmenere grape (from Bordeaux) a positive profile in Northeastern Italy, where it arrived in the late 19th century. Complex mushroom, soy-sauce and spicy character. The racy tannins and acidity are married to the juicy and vibrant palate, which breaks the mold for this region decisively! Drink or hold." 93/100, James Suckling, Jun'2021
"The Tenuta San Leonardo 2016 Carmenère is less immediately expressive compared to the warm 2015 vintage that I tasted at the same time. However, my money is on this bottle for longer aging potential, and I'm sure the wine's aromas will prove fluid and complex with additional bottle age. Even now, it shows enormous precision with dark fruit, spice and a good dose of crushed white pepper." 91/100, Monica Larner, Robert Parker, Dec'2022
2015 Vintage
"Savory, sweet, spicy and fresh, the 2015 Carmenère di San Leonardo is pulling me closer and closer to the glass with its seductive bouquet, mixing depths of cherry and young strawberry with cracked black pepper, rosemary and sage, as white smoke combines with the slightest hint of brown sugar to set off all of the pleasure sensors in the brain. This is elegant and refined, showing silky textures playing host to tart red and a hint of black fruit, with noble tannins, as inner florals and savory herbs resonate for up to a minute, leaving just a hint of blackberry in their wake. This is a selection from San Leonardo’s oldest vines of Carmenère, and it’s a stunner!" 94/100, Eric Guido, Nov 2020
The Wine
"Coming from the oldest vineyards of Carmenère, this wine is the very quintessence of our growing area," is how the producers describe the wine.
Age for 24 months in new, and once or twice used French oak barrels, Carmenere, the grape is the secret sauce that for decades added the finesse to their flagship San Leonardo.
This 100% Carmenere has a silky mouthfeel if you want to enjoy now but is equally happy to be laid down for 30 years in your cellars.
