Tasting notes & Reviews
2019 Vintage:
"A deep set of red plums and berries with some fine tobacco leaf and savory herbs, mineral and porcini. Juicy and intense on the palate with lots of chalky, nicely chewy tannins and a juicy finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better after 2023." 93/100, James Suckling, Nov'22
"A blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from the small Tuscan DOCG of Carmignano, matured for 12-16 months in a blend of tonneaux and botti. Concentrated and spicy, it's full of perfumed dried fruits and violets, with dusty notes of tobacco and earth on the finish." 92/100, Decanter, Jan'23
2017 Vintage:
"The 2017 vintage was so dry and warm that by the end of September there were 400ml of rainfall registered compared to the annual average of 800-900ml. 'We were lucky to have 15 hectares under irrigation,' says Filippo Contini Bonacossi, 'thanks to the lakes obtained by my father. There we were able to produce outstanding grapes'. Aged partially in large oak, this organic Carmignano - a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon - shines for its richness of fruit with ripe cherry and cassis, clove and carrube spices, then officinal herbs in depth. Broad and powerful, extracted yet crunchy, it shows a fresh yet not overt acidity, with a glycerol-rich texture and a great saline finish." 93/100, Decanter Sep 2020
2016 Vintage
"Made with organic fruit, the 2016 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana is an 80/20 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is open and accessible, showing a graceful and pure quality of fruit with dark cherry, blackberry, spice, tar and tobacco. The mouthfeel is streamlined and compact, but what this wine lacks in power it makes up for in elegance. This sample from 2016 was sent along with a bottle from 2010 so that I could track its impressive bottle evolution. In fact, I widened my suggested drinking window after tasting that older bottle." 94/100 Monica Larner, RobertParker.com
"Plum and dried orange-peel aromas follow through to a full body and tight, firm tannins. Savory finish. Succulent. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will age nicely. Better in 2020." 93/100 James Suckling Apr 2019
The Wine & The Estate
The flag bearer, the pioneer, proudly carrying the weight of the enormous Carmignano legacy of quality wines for centuries, Villa di Capezzana is a true icon. Starting 1925, this super Tuscan blend in many ways had already been around for decades vowing the audience before the wine world became smitten with the super Tuscan movement.
Aged for about 2 yrs, first in French barriques and tonneaux and then in bottles, starting 2015 vintage the vineyards are now certified organic. This is one super Tuscan that brings super joy with every Vintage with its smooth, almost velvety tannins. That it is so marvelously priced, is just a side advantage. Villa di Capezzana is the pride and joy of the Wine Monk Portfolio.
Villa as it is fondly called by the winery and a number of customers usually gets into its stride from 4th year and is shining by the 5th. Most of our stock rarely lasts beyond their 5th anni.
Villa di Capezzana has always, always, punched above its weight and it was thrilling to note, that 16s had their best showing last year with a Decanter score of 96/100 in December of 2020
