Looking for a true Tuscan rising star? Why would a producer rave about their entry level bottling so much? This historical tuscan estate is so proud they almost wear it on their sleeve.
This was the question that kept going through my mind on and on as we sat down to taste the Barco Reale from Capezzana for the first time. First introduced with the 1984 Vintage, Barco Reale is an initiation into the house of Capezzana where the grapes get the same care and attention as their flagship Villa di Capezzana DOCG. Althiugh the first tasting confirmed it was more than an easy drinking bottle, it wasn't until a couple of years later when we opened a 6 bottle pack that a customer had ordered and left it with us and later changed their mind, that we truly understood this wine. Barco Reale di Carmignano DOC takes its name from the Medici property whose boundaries were defined by the "wall of BarcoReale", more than 50 kms long. It is a tuscan wine that is produced with the same grapes as the flagship Villa di Capezzana DOCG (Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon), plus the addition of Canaiolo and vinified in steel tanks and developed for about 12 months in allier barrels. A further 3 months in the bottle gets the wine ready to hit the foreign shores. Barco is meant to be drunk young. Most people probably won't take it beyond its 2nd anniversary. Yet, what we are discovering is the bottle starts to turn into something else, at the turn of its 3rd anniversary and continues to blossom into 4th . A bottle enclosed was opened and heartily enjoyed with a variety of food today. Normally $38. Now $29. For 6, at the lightest of light wallet price of $27/- Extreme value to firmly drive away CB blues.
